Malaria; Malaria; Malaria outreach to migrant community Travel from Siem Reap to Pailin City in Pailin Province in the west of Cambodia, bordering Thailand. More than 4 hours drive. the issue of malaria drug resistance is of major international concern, and this region is one of the hotspots. And former Khmer Rouge stronghold. Migrant worker cross the border frequently as farmers or traders, and are difficult to track because of their mobility, posing a risk to spreading of malaria. During the Khmer Rouge rule mono-therapy drugs were overused (supplied by China), and may have contributed to the origins of resistance (it's actually mono-therapy resistance, not necessarily artemisinin resistance). There are 7 health facilities plus 1 hospital in Pailin district. There are 225 community health workers spread over 140 villages. There are two groups of health workers in terms of malaria control: MMW (Migrant Malaria Workers) and VMW (Village Malaria Workers)Government pays the salaries of the health workers. The training of the health workers and the treatment is financed through the Global FundA steep decrease in the number of malaria cases is seen in the region about 8 years ago, and ever since remained at a relatively low level. No malaria deaths have been reported since 2009 in the region.
