After lunch, we visit the local Family Health Center in Sonsonate, where we meet Dr. Francisco Menjivar. He is not very tall. Dr. Menjivar will be our main character for a small video story. He runs, or used to run, the STI clinic inside the center (very similar to the one visited in the morning on the 13th). He studied to become a doctor in Cuba, then returned to El Salvador to do a year of practice. His frequent meetings with women, particularly sex workers, made him want to do more. In fact, in he often goes out in evenings to do outreach, visiting bars and nightclubs in sometimes dangerous neighborhoods. During his video interview, Dr. Menjivar recalls a woman/sex worker who visited his STI clinic, said she was beaten unconscious “while at work”, and did’t remember if a condom was used. Experiences like these made him want to go beyond his normal scope of work. Today, he no longer officially works with the clinic, but is often around to help.
