Thet Thet Mar's four year old boy, Myo has had a high grade fever for four days. He’s also been vomiting and suffering diarrhoea. A trained community volunteer spotted Myo’s conditions and suspected malaria, referring mother and son to this Kawthaung District Hospital. Myo is stoic but glum as a nurse conducts a rapid diagnostic test. It comes back negative, no malaria and no malaria medicine. Prescription without diagnosis has been one of the drivers of drug resistant malaria, but through a partnership involving the Global Fund, UNOPS and the Myanmar Health Ministry, the problem is being tackled. This same hospital also screens every expecting mother for HIV, helping drive cases of mother-to-child HIV transmission to zero.
