Beyond the Cut - Voluntary Male Medical Circumcision in Kenya
Lutgard Oketch explains the benefits of voluntary male medical circumcision to a group of bikers who run motorbike taxis in Siaya County, Kenya. As “circumcision mobilizer” she travels from village to village calling on men who haven’t been circumcised to undergo the intervention as a means of protection against HIV. Studies have shown that male circumcision reduces HIV infection risk by approximately 60%. In Siaya County alone, local partners working together with the Kenya’s National AIDS and STI Control Program (NASCOP) have led a campaign that has seen more than 200,000 men adopt medical circumcision since 2008.
