After the morning reporting at the beach, we move to Jane Adoya’s house where we meet her support group, which has also turned into a table-banking initiative where members exchange ideas exchange and support each other to be economically independent and stay away from sex-for–fish.
A table banking scheme, whereby all members of a group contribute money and are allowed take a loan from the pool (at around 10% interest usually), allowed Jane to rent a fishing boat at 10,000 shilling in partnership with another woman. An owner or renter of a fishing boat can determine whom to sell the fish to, and get to choose the fishermen crew who in turn rent the boat, and as a result she managed to escape the sex for fish trade. It helps a lot, even though the scarcity of fishermen diminishes the choice of fishermen crew. Eventually, Jane was able to even buy a fishing boat at a price of 100,000 shillings (roughly USD1000).
With the income gained she gathered enough money to buy her own boat at 100,000 shilling.
Community health volunteers come to to talk from the group. When the group activities are done, we follow Eunice Adhiambo to the local health facility, where she visits with her kid for checkup.
