Alice Adhiambo – Orwar has been CHV for 7 years and is proud to help the community. She does about 2 home visits a week. Through an IGA program from another ngo, plus a bit of table banking, the group of 12 CHVs bought a large tent and 50 chairs that they rent out for events (parties, weddings). They also bought one goat for each CHV, and even accessories for their community health work, like plastic gloves, work clothes. Right nw they have 70,000 shillings (70 USD) in their account.
The Global Fund supports the RDTs, ACT medicine, and training of the CHVs
After lunch the team joins on two home visits by CHVs. The first patient is Belinda Achieng. Ernest did an interview in Swahili. The 4-year-old son is seen being tested, and tested positive for malaria.
Belinda Achieng, 22 years – a mother of two – Michael Barrack, 3 weeks old and Denzel Okoth, 5 years.
Belinda got sick with malaria while pregnant with Michael, it became quite severe she had to stop her small business sewing, repairing and making people clothes in town. She has now recoveredbut is yet to return to her business now that she has a newborn.
On the day of the visit, Denzel has fever. The community health volunteers test him for malaria using rapid diagonistics test and they find the disease in his blood. He is promptly treated.
