In La Unión, El Salvador, tuberculosis patient Gilberto Chavez is well on his way to recovery. A community health promoter oversees Gilberto’s treatment and regularly visits this construction worker and father of three. Despite the fact that all communities in the country are served by health facilities that provide TB services, TB remains a major public health issue in El Salvador, particularly in densely populated areas like Gilberto’s neighborhood. For this reason, Global Fund-supported programs to prevent and treat TB in the country focus on those municipalities where they can have the greatest impact.
