In the Fann Hospital in Dakar, Senegal, Dr Ndeye Fatou Ngom Gueye has a routine checkup with a patient who is HIV positive. She needs to renew her prescription of antiretroviral therapy, but because there is such a stigma against people living with HIV in this area, she will leave the hospital with the drugs in an unlabelled bottle; the ARV packaging is discarded at the pharmacy.
Dr Ndeye Fatou stresses the importance of taking the ARV pills on time to each of her patients, ensuring they have no lapses in their treatment. She will see this patient three months later, to provide her with another prescription refill, fighting HIV in Senegal one checkup at a time.
