A Disease with No Respect for Borders
PHOTO OF THE WEEK (8 JANUARY 2015) - At a checkpoint on the Cambodian-Thai border near Psa Prum, health workers check for fever among migrant workers and others entering Thailand. When someone’s temperature is considered elevated, he or she is asked take a voluntary malaria test at the nearby screening stand. Three-year-old My Piseth was found to have a fever when he arrived at the check-point with his mother, although in his case a malaria test was negative, so he was referred to a health center for a further check-up. Because humans are the host for the malaria parasite, which is passed from one person to the next through mosquito bites, the ability to screen migrant workers for malaria helps to reduce the spread of the disease across borders, as well as to protect the migrant workers themselves. Alongside other partners, the Global Fund provides support to the initiative by funding health workers’ salaries.
