From Survivor to Agent of Change

After several misdiagnosis, Ramatoulaye (right) found out that she had tuberculosis (TB). Once recovered, she dedicated herself to educating the population of her neighborhood in Dakar (Senegal) about the symptoms of the disease and the need to adhere to treatment. Today, she does about 20 home visits a day: "I offer these families the kind of support that I had. My sister Bineta (left) supported me through my treatment, making sure that I followed my treatment to the letter and that I ate properly. She also got my children tested regularly."

Programs financed by the Global Fund in Senegal support community outreach – a crucial component in early case detection and treatment support. Ramatoulaye’s commitment and tenacity have been recognized by the Banlieue sans TB [TB-free Neighborhood] movement; she is living proof that TB can be beaten.
