PHOTO FROM THE FIELD (17 NOVEMBER 2016) - Preparing for their day, outreach workers for a peer-lead sex worker program managed by the Perinatal HIV Research Unit (PHRU) pick up condoms and other supplies for distribution to sex workers in the community. Estimates are that 8000 women are doing sex work to some degree, in Soweto alone. The program takes a comprehensive approach, including counselling and HIV testing, health referrals and also starting sex workers on PReP or Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis treatment, to protect them from HIV infection. The team (currently eleven outreach staff) has reached more than 4000 sex workers in the two and a half years since it began in 2013.
