Toward Universal Protection for Malaria, One Net at a Time
PHOTO FROM THE FIELD (2 SEPTEMBER 2015) - On Ilha Xefina Pequena, a tiny island just off the coast of Maputo, about 30 families gather to receive mosquito nets as the December rainy season begins. The day to receive their free nets has been scheduled months in advance, as part of a nationwide campaign to make sure that every family living in malaria endemic regions of the country is protected with nets. Health workers have brought the long lasting insecticide treated nets (LLINs) across in small boats from the mainland, and a careful system of advanced mapping of the families and registering each net delivered is used to track the impact of the campaign. Throughout the country, 5.2 million mosquito nets were scheduled for delivery, bringing Mozambique to the point of universal coverage with nets for the first time.
