Community Counselors at Work to ‘Zapp’ HIV Infections in Zimbabwe
PHOTO FROM THE FIELD (5 MAY 2016) - At Saint Mary’s Clinic in Chitingwiza, a community near Harare, Miriam Chakaipa follows up with HIV-positive mothers who received preventative treatment to protect their babies during pregnancy. Miriam works as a community counselor with the Zimbabwe AIDS Prevention Project or ZAPP, an NGO doing public outreach to create behavior change for HIV prevention, and to encourage treatment adherence for people living with HIV. Miriam herself tested positive during a pregnancy years ago and is a PMTCT ‘graduate’ with a teenage daughter who was born free of the virus.
