Jane Adoya leads a community lending (“table-banking”) scheme for women affected by a custom called “Sex for Fish”, whereby women are forced to provide sexual favors to fishermen in exchange for fish they need to survive. Most of the women in the group are HIV-positive. The lending scheme, set up with support from local health workers, helps women become financially more empowered and has allowed Jane to set up her own business, freeing her from the sex for fish trade.
