A hugely important factor in Rwanda's health gains has been a well-functioning national network of thousands of community health workers at the village level. There are hundreds of clinics, all with basic equipment and a full cupboard of essential medicines. Each of RwandaÕs 30 districts has a hospital, with at minimum 15 doctors, offering basic surgical services.

RwandaÕs health gains in the last decade are among the worldÕs most dramatic. Health insurance Ñ called Mutuelle de SantŽ Ñ is nearly universal, life expectancy rose from 29 to 68 years between 1994 and 2015, and mortality during childbirth fell by 70% over the same period.
